Leadership

Gay Larson, Executive Director

Tulsa resident Gay Larson is the founder and executive director of the Waiting Child Heart Gallery of Oklahoma. She is also an adoptive parent and lifelong photographer. While attending a Santa Fe photography workshop in 2001, she learned about the Heart Gallery concept from instructor Debbie Fleming Caffrey. The idea of using photography to help build “forever families” resonated with Larson, and she immediately began working to establish a Heart Gallery in Oklahoma.

Strengthened by partnerships with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services and her then-employer KTUL-Channel 8, Larson engaged supporters across the state. In March 2002, the Waiting Child Heart Gallery of Oklahoma became a reality. It was the second Heart Gallery in the nation, and today it is one of more than 80 across the United States.

Larson has continued to strengthen the Waiting Child Heart Gallery over the years, adding a partnership with Wendy’s Wonderful Kids and developing a network of photographers and community supporters. After an extensive career as an account executive with KTUL-Channel 8, she retired in 2016 to focus solely on the Oklahoma Heart Gallery.
